Community Sewing/Textiles Project

Our Community Sewing/Textiles project is very popular among members from all sections of the community where learners gain hands on experience in various aspects of dressmaking.

We ran Sewing/Textiles project previously. However, due to lack of funding and Covid-19 pandemic, we were unable to continue. Now, thanks to the grant from Health Lottery London East -Active Communities Funding Programme we were a given completely  fresh start.

As is well-known in the community, the ownership of our centre belongs to the community and our service users. The project idea came from our clients that they meet weekly and do some worthwhile activity in order to bring community members together and learn some skill. The participants run this project and freely choose the module with tutor and Coordinator consultation. All members, who are involved in the project delivery at our centre are passionate and put every effort into it.

Through this project we intend to provide learners the opportunity to become Sewing/Textile Champions and put their knowledge back into the community. This spread of knowledge will help to build strong links as the process will be continuous. The project will provide customised training suitable to individual learners. Learners will also be able to use the ICT facilities that are provided at our centre to further enhance their skills in order to develop their learning to match the present trends and needs of the textiles industry.

We are all inclusive and welcome members from all sections of the community. We expect majority of our clients to come from the surrounding area within walking distance.

Expansion of this Project & Further Information - Valentine Day Launch

Keeping up with our ambitious aim to improve our services, we have moved this project to a new venue with a Valentine Day 2023 Launch. Following are the details.

Morale Boosting Visit

Morale Boosting Visit

On Tuesday, the 4th April 2023, we were very pleased to welcome two Officers Ms Katie Styles (Senior Partnership Officer) and Elaine Battson (Director of Finance and Operations) from the Peoples Health Trust. We regard the visit as a morale booster for us and our service users. We are very grateful to both the officers for spending their valuable time with us as they travelled all the way from central London to reach us. Everyone at the Slade Centre was impressed by their courteous and polite approach and the way they made enquiries about the project as evident from the photos.

Thank you letter from St. Thomas' Hospital

Thank you letter from St. Thomas' Hospital

Dear Bal,

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner. Please thank all of the team for the amazing job they did providing so many gifts for us to share this Christmas. We were able to provide quilts for all the babies across the unit and the teddy bears were a huge hit with the families. We really appreciate all of the effort that everyone has gone to. Please send best wishes to all.

About Community Sewing/Textiles Project

"The Sewing class held at the Island centre, Woolwich is friendly & diverse. I have learnt a lot of sewing skills & also taught how to pattern design a garment to fit properly."

"I love the diverse community spirit at the Sewing class. We all help and support each other learning new skills all the way."

"I always feel welcome at this centre as there is a community spirit. We help each other, we share ideas and enjoy our time. Definitely, we want to spend more time in the centre as time passes very fast. Hope this project will continue."

"I used to spend lot of money buying garments. Now, I buy material and design and sew the garments myself, saving me the visit to the shops in Green Street and also I make sure that the garments are the right size."
